ah crap, another idea coopted from the ‘good guys’.

The idea of sustainable investment or ethical investment isn’t new, it’s just that it’s traditionally been the bastion of the poor-and-unable-to-make-a-significant-investment group; namely people sitting to the left of the political linear centre.

Scarey really because the only ‘democratic’ power left to us (I’m convinced) is our buying power. I guess it’s symptomatic that the ‘right’ is beating us even at that.

While I disagree with the majority of beliefs the Christian Right has about the definition of morality and what liberty and freedom mean, I don’t think they are being insidious here. People have a right to do what they want with their money. I’m part of an ethical investment company because I can’t invest in oil companies, pharmaceuticals, and the like out of good conscience.

I agree with gaanjah_mama that it is scary that the “only ‘democratic’ powere left to us is our buying power.” This should come as no surprise in a Fascist country. The definition of fascism is that government is controlled by corporate interests.

when are these folks going to get around to a full on boycott of Walmart for doing business with the heathen, commie, abortion-loving Chinese?

It must still appeal to their frugal values and good for employment… (so they think)

I think you guys need to take a step back and look at the situation. These corporations would not even pay attention to these groups unless 1) there were enough people as shareholders/board members that are sympathetic to the cause, or 2) the petitioning groups were powerful enough to actually cause some sort of financial/political damage to the company if they did not comply. They would not give any notice if these groups did not have one of these two things going for them. This should tell you that in either case this country is heavy enough in supporting right wing conservative values that these companies find value/profit motive in bending to their opinions – and isn’t it the democratic way to support the majority? (sarcasm) If anything the left should create their own boycotts, as it seems in this case you might have to fight fire with fire to get any attention.

Perhaps you’re missing the biggest reason companies have in supporting these groups. It’s a money laundering scheme. Donations to religious groups/entities are tax-deductable, and the groups are tax exempt. You can figure it out from there.
