LA PAZ, Bolivia: The last remaining judge on Bolivia’s top constitutional court has ordered the government to put off a referendum on whether the president and governors should stay in power. But officials said Wednesday they would ignore her.

Magistrate Silvia Salame said Tuesday that the National Electoral Court should suspend the Aug. 10 vote until the full Constitutional Tribunal can rule on challenges arguing the referendum is illegal.

President Evo Morales has promoted the referendum in hopes the vote will boost his standing in disputes with state governors who are trying to win more autonomy from the central government.

Electoral Court President Jose Luis Exeni announced Wednesday that the referendum will go forward, despite Salame’s order.

Administration officials argued that Salame had no power to rule because the tribunal’s decisions require at least three votes and Salame is only magistrate still serving. Four others resigned, complaining of political interference, and the sharply divided national legislature has been unable to agree on their replacements.
