Crap like this always makes me wonder if politicians and generals are a completely different species. Even if they created this beautiful, accurate missile defense shield, what would it accomplish?

One ICBM after another… zap, boom, bang. All vaporized in the upper atmosphere. How many before the attacker gives up? Hundreds? Thousands? And then?

Destroying a nuclear warhead does not make it any less radioactive. Now there are hundreds to thousands of kilograms of vaporized nuclear material hovering up there. Eventually it will drift down, into the biosphere. And then?

A tip of the hat to all of the “top men”, for their profound research and hard work. You have successfully turned a bang into a whimper.

Post Edit…
I’ve figured it out! They played way to much Missile Command back in the day, and they think that shit represents reality! No debris, just a boom of pixels that fade into nothing. If only the anti-video game crowd had been around, they could have slapped on an M rating…

The rational, though I don’t necessarily agree with it, is that if the opposing force perceives a very low probability that their missiles will reach their targets, they are then deterred from launching them.

The problem then becomes what alternative means of attack or counter attack become viable or desirable to possess when you can no longer rely on a nuclear deterrent as in the past.

There are alternatives means to achieve widespread destruction even if you can’t target an opponent’s cities with nuclear or other ballistic missile delivered weapons.

True dat.

They focus on the immediate, the now, the “me”, “my family”, “my nation”, “my children”. I follow the suggestion of others and carry this out further, to those I’ll never know – to the seventh generation.

In the now, as the “superpowers” with sole access to a specific set of technologies, it may seem like a great idea. Who would waste their arsenal against such a shield? Maybe an egotistical nut or two, a few warheads.

And then? Someday, when all superpowers have developed such shields… How will these superpowers devise ways to break through them? Who will know they have the better shield, with no war having tested it? Will shield services be in place for all nations, the Goliaths renting out their services? At what point does someone decide “I have more warheads/decoys than my hated enemy can possibly stop.”?

I don’t think all of the resources spent on this technology is wasted. It can be applied to peaceful uses. I’m hopeful.

That is deep, poetic and profound…

Seems we need to get off planet
