This allegory of Plato shows a frightening resemblence to our media fixture.
The set up of the shadow play in the cave sound very much like a desription of how the TV catode tube works. The story also sound a lot like The Matrix.

“Platon’s best known analogy, the Cave Analogy, shows the uprise to the Ideas:
The people are similar to humans being tied in a cave, so they are just able to look at a wall in the cave. Onto this wall shadows of artificial things are casted by an invisible fire behind the person. The tied human thinks these shadows of images are the reality, which are but the sensual appearances. The things themselves, that casted the shadows, are just visible to the man who has got rid of his ties: He realises that the shadows are just projections of the real things.
Now when this person leaves the cave, he first gets blinded by the daylight, the light of the upper world, and he first will only see shadows and reflections; after a process of adaptation he’ll see the things themselves and finally the sun, and understand that it is the main reason of being.”

Another famous prediction of film and Television is one of Nostradamus Quantrines which ive only read translated to Swedish. But a rough translation would be something like this.

Sublime bodies will be endlessly seen.
And for the lens of the eye it will be shown like this.
Only surface, invisibly lead.
The holy prayer then will decrease.

“Now when this person leaves the cave, he first gets blinded by the daylight”

I had that happen after I played Knights of the Old Republic for like a week straight.

I found the complete version here.

“And now look again, and see what will naturally follow if the prisoners are released and disabused of their error. At first, when any of them is liberated and compelled suddenly to stand up and turn his neck round and walk and look towards the light, he will suffer sharp pains; the glare will distress him, and he will be unable to see the realities of which in his former state he had seen the shadows; and then conceive some one saying to him, that what he saw before was an illusion, but that now, when he is approaching nearer to being and his eye is turned towards more real existence, he has a clearer vision, -what will be his reply? And you may further imagine that his instructor is pointing to the objects as they pass and requiring him to name them, — will he not be perplexed? Will he not fancy that the shadows which he formerly saw are truer than the objects which are now shown to him?”

And that’s why people watch Fox News.

This also applies to conspiracy theories. Most people cannot grasp the idea of conspiracies or so called noble lies to be a part of our historical legacy.

“Most people, including ourselves, live in a world of relative ignorance. We are even comfortable with that ignorance, because it is all we know. When we first start facing truth, the process may be frightening, and many people run back to their old lives. But if you continue to seek truth, you will eventually be able to handle it better. In fact, you want more! It’s true that many people around you now may think you are weird or even a danger to society, but you don’t care. Once you’ve tasted the truth, you won’t ever want to go back to being ignorant!”
