Bolivia Plans to Nationalize More Sectors
Only days after signing a new trade agreement with socialist revolutionaries Venezuela and Cuba and hours after dispatching armed forces to reclaim natural gas facilities, Evo Morales has taken another bold stand by promising to nationalize not only the petroleum industry, but forestry, mining, and more. These moves will likely drive away many current investors and increase the importance of the ALBA movement.

LA PAZ, Bolivia – Bolivia’s leftist government said Tuesday it would extend control over mining, forestry and other sectors of the economy after President Evo Morales nationalized the country’s huge natural gas industry. Foreign governments warned relations could be damaged.
Soldiers were posted at 56 gas installations around the country a day after Morales issued a decree that analysts say could drive petroleum companies from South America’s poorest nation and isolate Bolivia from important allies like Brazil and Spain.
The move solidifies Morales’ role alongside Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez and Cuba’s Fidel Castro in Latin America’s new axis of socialist-inclined leaders united against “capitalist, imperialist” U.S. influence.
Morales said Monday that the gas decree “was just the beginning, because tomorrow it will be the mines, the forest resources and the land.” Morales’ planning minister earlier this month spoke of plans for “drastic reforms” of mining laws.
AP writers Alan Clendenning in Mexico City and Harold Olmos in Santa Cruz contributed to this story.
On Tuesday, Vice President Alvaro Garcia Linera said mining companies could face higher taxes and royalty payments and that the government will intensify enforcement of existing laws to break up big underdeveloped land holdings, apparently to turn them over to the poor.

Lost and very much alone in the heart of the empire.

Good for Morales, the natural resources of Bolivia should belong to Bolivians, not foreign multi-national corporations. Now Morales needs to figure out away to keep the petroleum flowing and resditribute the largess.
Do we think the Mexicans are starting to get very psyched for their possible near future? I FN hope so. Yay Evo! AMLO’s recompiling his arsekissin list, definitely. As we speak. Total burned their bridges in Venezuela (LOL). So. If they decide to burn their bridges also in Bolivia . . . and you know the invasion of Iraq isn’t doing their supplies (profit margins) any favors . . . France really better start being very nice to Iran. And Palestine. Wait a minute. They are. Ahhhhhhhhhh. . .
A lovely daring piece in counterpunch, also, that suggests that the real solution to the problem the United States poses for the whole planet right now is to nationalize the US oil industry. I gotta tell ya, I think it flies. I like it.
And the defense industry too. Nationalize the defense industry. Then we might get some serious reporting out of what is currently Corporate Mass Media.
While we’re at it we could maybe nationalize the government too.
i think you mean nationalize the defense industry?
uh oh! some brown people have the balls to make money off the resources on their land! Call in the military! Where’s Kermit Roosevelt when you need a coup?
yes…. in fact, i did. gracias.
