Women and Jobless Armed by Chavez to Resist "U.S. Invasion"
Hugo Chavez, the Venezuelan petro-socialist President that Washington loves to hate, is at it again. This time he’s preparing soldiers for a U.S. invasion, recruiting the unemployed, students, and housewives.

Housewives, students, construction workers and the unemployed are being recruited for the country’s Territorial Guard. The first training sessions with firearms have already taken place.
“I can assure you right away that also in this battle we will defeat the US empire,” Mr. Chavez said in a speech last week. A former army officer who turned to politics after his attempt at a coup in 1992 failed, he has raised the spectre of a US invasion so often that Washington’s ambassador, William Brownfield, put it on record last year that “the United States has never invaded … and will never invade Venezuela”.
Though Venezuela is a major supplier of oil to the US, relations between the Bush administration and Mr. Chavez, a strident critic of Washington-backed free-market policies, remain fraught. As a result, he has become a hero for many left-wing Latin Americans opposed to the US.
They point out that Washington has a long history of supporting rebels seeking to overthrow democratically-elected leftist governments in Latin America. More recently, the Bush administration supported business leaders who forced out Haiti’s elected leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide.
In 2002, senior White House officials held meetings with opponents of Chavez who orchestrated a short-lived coup. Washington quickly welcomed…

Heh, at first I thought it said “women and armless are being armed to fight US invasion.”
Funny note aside, I’ve been somewhat of a Chavez supporter for a while now, admiring what he has done but still regarding him with some suspicion. I applauded him when he distributed free copies of Don Quixote, and also when he began the doctor exchange program with Cuba. Blatantly political moves like this, however, only serve to undermine his credibility. I mean, seriously, women and jobless? Not to sound misogynistic, but especially in this day and age, sending them off to fight would be like sending lambs to the slaughter, much like the plans the Japanese government had, in the event of US invasion, to arm its populace with bamboo poles. Just focus on forging strong economic ties, and the US won’t be able to touch you.
That’s not the view of the IDF. There is a great deal to do in preparation for a resistance movement. It may seem incredulous and it’s surely political but political solidarity is much more important than international economic ties. The U.S. controls the high seas. It seems a bit paranoid from our perspective, but get out your map and look to see just how far it is from Panama, that other little Bush invasion of a soverign nation to do a regime change.
Sometimes no Peace,
From what you claim, all Chavez’s woman and childern invaded here and are protesting illegally for U.S. Rights?
“Human Rights Watch has accused Mr Chavez of undermining judicial independence by packing the Supreme Court with his supporters, and of stifling the rights of the media to criticise his administration.”
Human Rights Watch must be very busy since this “undermining judicial independence” and “stifling the rights of the media” sounds really familiar ie. America.
I think they’ve given up in the United States. They were sued by the State of Michigan for the names of imformants that had given them information when they investigated the Michigan Department of Corrections in the 1990’s. That was a first for them. Stonewalled before, yes. Sued, never.

The military has dismissed allegations by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez that it is planning an invasion of his country. But analysts say the show of force sends a signal to Chavez and other Latin American leaders about U.S. strength.

Venezuela Says U.S. Preparing For Invasion
“Mr Chavez” did not “overturn the coup within 48 hours”. The people of Venezuela did. In consort WITH the military. If you haven’t seen The Revolution Will Not Be Televised maybe you missed it.
The women and jobless emphasis appears to have been Shift’s. As was the business of putting “US Invasion” in quotes like it was the figment of some madman’s imagination. What we know, as a result, is a little more about Shift.
“Housewives, students, construction workers and the unemployed” are probably being recruited to give them fighting spirit. Anyone who has trained in the martial arts knows how much of a difference this can make to your self-confidence in all endeavors.
In short? Another incredibly smart move by El Presidente.
I know, I never shut up.
Ubiquity, I agree with you. The possibility of an invasion or a coup are real. Viva Chavez! – He hasn’t made a move yet that doesn’t seem warranted by circumstances.
