Iraqi residents are accusing the US Marines of going ballistic after a failed roadside bomb and killing 2 families

Shortly after a roadside bomb killed a U.S. Marine in a western Iraqi town, American troops went into nearby houses and shot dead 15 members of two families, including a 3-year-old-girl, residents say.
The military is investigating possible misconduct by the Marines and confirms there is a video, which Time Magazine says shows the aftermath of the Marines’ assault.

Residents contacted by The Associated Press described what happened after the Nov. 19 roadside bomb in the town of Haditha, 140 miles northwest of Baghdad, as “a massacre.’‘

Khaled Ahmed Rsayef, whose brother and six other members of his family were killed in the incident, said the roadside bomb exploded at about 7:15 a.m. in the al-Subhani neighborhood. A U.S. Humvee was badly damaged.

The military acknowledged Monday it was investigating the incident after it was approached by Time with accounts from residents, officials and hospital authorities in Haditha as well as a videotape purportedly showing the aftermath of the incident.

Military officials declined further comment.

A U.S. military statement shortly after the November attack described what happened as an ambush on a joint U.S.-Iraqi patrol, with a roadside bombing and subsequent firefight killing 15 civilians, eight insurgents and a U.S.

Hey, Hey, USA, how many babies did you kill today?

guerillaman @ 03/20/06 15:36:54

“The probe, Time reported, concluded that the civilians were killed by Marines and not a roadside bomb, and that no insurgents appeared to be in the first two houses raided by the Marines.

The probe found, however, that the deaths were the result of “collateral damage,’’ investigators said.”

I am unsure what this euphamism means in this context. The marines were responsible, but the deaths were “collateral damage”? Ths is confusing… does this fall under one of those categoric headings of ‘all civilian deaths’ = collateral damage? I certainly hope not.

Are the marines losing it? Is the desert getting to them? Or are these incidents simply getting reported more nowadays that the war is coming under fire from the public, so the news media like “Time” feel they can cover more…. either way, its bad for peace, and for the US soldiers who are dealing with pissed off Iraqis.

tyrecian @ 03/20/06 15:41:45

“The marines were responsible, but the deaths were “collateral damage”? “

It means that the civilians died because the marines went into the houses grenade and rifle fire first. They were not directly targeted by the marines so they are “collateral” damage. The same way that they would have been “collateral” damage if an air strike was called in instead of just throwing genades through the doors and windows.

Wombat @ 03/20/06 16:26:53

We have to be careful with reports from ‘residents’.

We are often left with the impression that these residents are ordinary Iraqis just minding their own business and then suddenly they witness these horros by freedom’s army. But looks can be deceiving.

Rememeber Fallujah, the US expelled 1500 terrorists from that town, yet the far left said we gas and burned, what was it? a hundred million Iraqis.

At this point we do not know what happened, so we have to let the military investigate the incident. It is highly likely that this is a propaganda stunt by the insurgents, helped along by their useful idiot friends in the far left.

One is tempted to ask one question. Even if it were true that rogue Marines killed civilians, knowing they were innocent, highly unlikely, but let us say for arguments it was true. Why would anyone want to publicize it, just let the military court martial these guys and quietly put them in jail for a long time, It makes no sense to publicize unlawful conduct by the good guys in a vicious war against terrorists.

It would only make sense if someone wanted to terror gangs to win in Iraq and destroy democracy in Iraq.

IsraelForever2 @ 03/20/06 17:01:14

“Why would anyone want to publicize it, just let the military court martial these guys and quietly put them in jail for a long time, It makes no sense to publicize unlawful conduct by the good guys in a vicious war against terrorists.”

Das stimmt, Izzy! Why should we publicize our death camps and genocidal campaign against non-aryans, since we’re in a battle of good guys against the weak races?

senssensibilityr @ 03/20/06 18:42:08

Izzy’s logic fits so perfectly into Nazism it’s almost funny, but actually a lot more creepy.

senssensibilityr @ 03/20/06 18:42:39

“The magazine cited unidentified military officials close to the investigation. “

“It is highly likely that this is a propaganda stunt by the insurgents, helped along by their useful idiot friends in the far left.”

NEWS ALERT! NEWS ALERT! MILITARY PERSONEL FOUND TO BE FAR-LEFT IDIOTS!

I like the fact that Izzy thinks he knows better than military officials that investigated the massacre.

senssensibilityr @ 03/20/06 18:44:30

Jesus, Izzy…

Even the US military in Iraq understands the difference between terrorists and insurgents, as well as anyone with more than three working neurons to rub together. How is it that the corporate media, the DoD, and Iraqi government can see the difference between insurgents and “terror gangs,” and yet you cannot?

And you’d want to publicise it because otherwise it’d be covered up, you dimwit. CYA being the first rule of small units, and justice taking a back burner. Of course, with the military at large leaning perilously to the right, that unit was probably filled with people who think just like you. shudder But yeah, publicity would pretty much be the only way to see justice (and that’s what it is, even if a neo-Nazi like you refuses the point) done here.

That you claim to have loyalty to Israel the state is understandable with your mindset, but if you ever claim loyalty to the group of people slaughtered wholesale under the regime of people who think like you, I think I’ll vomit.

ManusCelerDei @ 03/20/06 19:45:29

Enter the “My Lai” phase…a new stage of failure.

ambanz @ 03/20/06 21:36:58

Yea… It is sounding more and more like Viet Nam, they don’t know who the enemy is and when something happens they attack the first thing they see walking in an upright position. When the actual perpetrators are miles away.

Kcoztips @ 03/20/06 22:50:44

Gotta watch those three year olds, though. Have you ever seen a three year old cutting loose with a minigun? Man, that shit’s scary!!!

Kill ‘em or convert ‘em to Christianity. Hey, it worked for the US military in the indigenous purges of the 19th century – ever read Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee? Could be a fucking blueprint on what to do with Iraq!! Hell, all of them goddamned A-rabs!! Kill ‘em or convert ‘em!

faelnarr @ 03/21/06 01:17:18

American PIGS. Murderers, liars and thieves. The whole goddamn lot of you.

Apocrypha @ 03/21/06 06:29:31

Americans are bad for peace. That is the bottom line and un-fucking-deniable. Everyone knows what happened in Fallujah. It isn’t ‘unclear’ in the least. Only American fundamentalist nuts like israelforever2 above believe it’s not clear what happened there.

Saddam and Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. Get it through your thick fucking skulls. Iraq faced 10 years of crushing sanctions after a brief war that bombed out pretty much all their military structure. Just where do you think they were hiding all this NON-EXISTENT WMD? That’s right…nowhere, because there wasn’t any left and no way to get more. There are goddamn video clips of fascist pig George Bush saying that Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11. There are goddamn video clips of Colin Powell and Condee Rice saying, before the current illegal war against Iraq, that Iraq is no threat at all to the US.

So WTF are american troops doing in Iraq murdering civilians?

Apocrypha @ 03/21/06 06:39:58

So it’s publicized instead of covered up. It’s not like this isn’t a war. Well, at least for Iraqis and invader/occupier Marines it is, as well as people with a conscience. Did we expect anything less, given our dubious history of dealing with brown/yellow/red/black people? It’s one thing to be a racist asshole within your own borders, but to go to a foreign place and sling yr dick around with impunity, killing local children…that takes balls. Big, brass, American balls.
How long before they make random Iraqis do a dabekah at various checkpoints?

Freedom’s army…what a douchebag. When you shuttle people off to secret prisons and torture them, you’re no better than the nazis and communists.

Belphegor69 @ 03/21/06 06:44:21

Ya, “freedoms army”. What a fucking joke. Freedom from what exactly? The burden of living?

Apocrypha @ 03/21/06 06:50:32

“American Pigs. Murderers, liars and thieves. The whole goddamned lot of you.”

Apocrypha, get a grip. There was a time when we Americans were taught to
think this about the Russians. While I understand and share your anger, don’t
lump all of us Americans into the same category. Just as we learned later in life
that Russians aren’t all bad (they brought down the “evil empire” from within),
if our own “evil empire” stands a chance of changing it will likely be at the hands
of AMERICAN PATRIOTS. We Americans who consider ourselves patriots in the
tradition of our forefathers have been deeply BETRAYED. This kind of anger runs
deep. Committing these atrocities in our name adds to our anger.

ambanz @ 03/21/06 08:10:15

ambanze, there is a flaw in your thinking.

The communists were an evil empire, ok, since Stalin, less evil than they might have been, but moderately evil just the same.

The US on the other hand, is great liberal democracy, a light amongst the nations. Yes, today there are other lights amongst the nations, as much of the world is adopting the western capitalist model of freedom, pioneered by the US and now spread hither and yond, to 2/3 rds of the planet.

IsraelForever2 @ 03/21/06 16:56:22

“ Ya, “freedoms army”. What a fucking joke. Freedom from what exactly? The burden of living? “

Freedom in Kuwait, freedom in Iraq.

IsraelForever2 @ 03/21/06 16:56:56

“Did we expect anything less, given our dubious history of dealing with brown/yellow/red/black people? “

Hey Bijan,

Aren’t you making a few assumptions?

IsraelForever2 @ 03/21/06 16:59:40

“Americans are bad for peace. That is the bottom line and un-fucking-deniable. Everyone knows what happened in Fallujah. It isn’t ‘unclear’ in the least. Only American fundamentalist nuts like israelforever2 above believe it’s not clear what happened there.”

Uhhh, As far as I can tell, the mainstream view doesn’t accept the far lies. The military analysts who appear on CNN, MSNBC and Fox, portray Fallujah as victory over terror and all seem to agree that our forces were magnificent.

btw, I hate to burst your far left bubble, but these operations are planned by Generals, not the White House. And our generals and other officers in the field are awesome.

IsraelForever2 @ 03/21/06 17:03:17

“ever read Bury my Heart at Wounded Knee? “

Awesome book a must read for everyone.

Wombat @ 03/21/06 17:23:47

“The military analysts who appear on CNN, MSNBC and Fox, portray Fallujah as victory over terror”

LOL.

Thats like saying that the local Bishop believes in God so it must be true.

“all seem to agree that our forces were magnificent.”

“And our generals and other officers in the field are awesome.”

You sound so much like a 1930s Nazi Party member its frightening. I bet you goose step from the lounge to the fridge when your hungry. Do you ever find yourself calling Iraq Poland by mistake.

Wombat @ 03/21/06 17:30:05

_ Do you ever find yourself calling Iraq Poland by mistake._

hahahaha Wombat!

eepicheep @ 03/21/06 17:34:45

Corporations are bad for peace… lets clarify that, they hold no loyalties to a particular country.
eep… did you vote today?

Kcoztips @ 03/21/06 18:26:20

“they hold no loyalties to a particular country.”

Are you saying that loyalty to a country, Nationalism, is the path to peace.

As for corporations I dont think that is there lack of loyalty that is the problem. Its their wealth and influence that is the problem. While they are just dicking around trying to make a buck everythings hunkydory. But when they start pushing political buttons to engineer an enviroment where they can make even more money, thats when the problems start. Its then time to pull them down and start again.

Wombat @ 03/21/06 19:04:03

Wombat… google “Snidely Butler”

Kcoztips @ 03/21/06 19:33:13

Did you mean “Smedley Butler” and “War is a Racket”.

Been there read that.

And I get your point, but my point is that the Gov, and by that “we the people”, should nip these suckers in the bud before they start any trouble. The fact that we dont only means that “we the people” dont actually run the Govt but Corporations do, we call that “Facism”, so the only altenative we have is to return to a Govt of “we the people” and put a reign on Corporations.

Wombat @ 03/21/06 19:49:29

Yea Smedley… sorry, I’m not the best speller

Kcoztips @ 03/21/06 20:10:03

Ok…. DID YOU FU*KIN VOTE TODAY?

Kcoztips @ 03/21/06 20:11:46

In Australia we have to vote… It dosen’t make the majority of us politically astute though. I mean, look who we’ve got as prime minister!
