If you’ve dreamed of having an Amsterdam-like Café in your hometown, it’s not impossible.

You can run the hippest joint in town!

If you’ve dreamed of having an Amsterdam-like Café in your hometown, it’s not impossible. Of course, you won’t be selling pot; that’s not going to fly in Vancouver or anywhere else in 2005 at anything other than a med-pot club (see “previous issue #57), but you can accommodate pot smokers by providing a sanctuary for them, one that is both self-sustaining, and spiritually satisfying.

Your Café is the front line in our cultural revolution! It’s not important to sell the pot. Your café is where our cannabis community comes to be together, and to be who they really are, in unity and enlightenment. You will be the local centre for the cannabis culture. You can make your dream come alive to commercial success and personal reward, which will quickly make you the ‘voice’ of the cannabis community in your area. Are you up for it?

Cannabis cafés have quickly become weeds that police and politicians find increasingly difficult to yank.

The pot-puffing lounge not only ensures enthusiasts have an amazing come-back-soon time, but it keeps the cash register ringing.

To be successful, and to keep the doors open, a well-developed income stream is critical. Unfortunately, grass sales…

A friend of mine is trying to do just this…

Its easy enough to sell coffee as well, ‘Don’t know what your talking about officer… we’re a coffee shop’ :D

Hairy @ 03/21/06 03:17:34

I call these shops “smokeasys” after the “speakeasys” built during the other Prohibition.

I also rewrote an old protest song:

WE SHALL OVERGROOOOOOOOOOWWWW
WE SHALL OOOVERGROOOOOOOOOWWWW
WE SHALL OVERGROOOOOW SOME DAAAAAAAAAYYY
DEEP IN MY HEART, I DO BELIEVE... THAT WE SHALL OVERGROW SOMEDAY.....

KIND AND SCHWAG TOGETHER ... KIND AND SCHWAG TOGETHER...
ETCETERA, ETCETERA, ETCETERA...

As Micheal Franti says, “Power to the Peaceful!

Good read, but I still like Anthony’s alternate headline ;)

Marc Emery Live Chat transcript from The Washington Post

Interesting read, and the questions are mostly from Americans. Looks like he has some support south of the border (except for a few people who informed him of his idiocy and megalomania).

“Good read, but I still like Anthony’s alternate headline ;)”

heh… that the police would able to “find all the stoners” at these places? Who cares! Anyone who goes to them knows that it’s a risk – anyone who smokes pot knows that it’s a risk, and there are ways of protecting yourself. The authors here recommend a buzz-in system, so you can hide/destroy the evidence before the Nazis burst through with a battering ram and a German Shepherd and a taser. “There’s nothing here officer, and my teeth are green because of an unrelated oral hygiene problem.”

Personally I’ve been stopped randomly on the streets several times by cops and have been searched for contraband (luckily a lot of cops seem to be quite dumb) – and yet I’ve never seen a cop in any of the headshops or smoke-friendly cafe’s I’ve been to.

totalstranger @ 03/21/06 12:23:29

ts,

Yeah, it was a joke.
I enjoy the Amsterdam, and have never (ever, ever) had problems with the cops regarding pot.

Anyone else have Modzilla Foxfire firewall problems upon trying to print this article?
My Foxfire shut down. Error reported, strange days… increases my paranoia. Paranoia is a survival mechanism. Use it carefully. WE SHALL OVERGROOOOOOOOOWWW! Yo estoy Marc e Marcos! VIVA!

“Yeah, it was a joke.”

yeahh… But wasn’t it a nice rant? I had Nazis in there and everything… ;-P

“I enjoy the Amsterdam, and have never (ever, ever) had problems with the cops regarding pot.”

I go to pro-pot protests and weed-fueled concerts, and places where stoners hang out – and I’ve never had police problems. At a couple music festivals I’ve toked right in front of the police. But I take a walk in the park, and the cops stop me and make me open my bag and stuff. Must be the way I walk or something. And maybe the long hair.. hmm.. plus the hookah I carry around..

Still, I’ve never been busted. There’s nothing quite like talking your way out of it when you’re high.

“Modzilla Foxfire firewall problems upon trying to print this article?
My Foxfire shut down”

Not sure what you mean.. I use FireFox, and have no problems printing it or viewing it, and the firewall I use isn’t giving me any grief. Unless you have a content filter or something it may be a problem with the program or your machine.

totalstranger @ 03/21/06 14:49:58

Thank you. I guess it was a filter.

guerillaman @ 03/21/06 16:32:34

great article!

Namaste_Rich @ 03/21/06 16:38:14

Income stream = plenty of munchies.

Chickenma1 @ 03/22/06 00:15:04

There’s been attempts in the UK to set up smoker friendly cafes and bars with little success, although after reading an article in Soft Secrets (softsecrets.nl) about extracting THC through boiling with butter, making a great base ingredient for your more psychoactive culinary efforts, i think the best way to succeed in this country might be to just spike one of the dishes you serve and jack the price up

lozly @ 03/23/06 10:29:04

I know of at least 2 bars in belfast where it is perfectly fine to skin up a fat one.. I’m sure the police know about it, but leave it alone.

Then there was the Howard Marks show mmm.. doobies-a-go-go

Hairy @ 03/23/06 10:53:15

CTV News does a report on Harper’s war on drugs and Toronto’s Cannabis Cafés (wmv). I swear that the newscasters at the end of the segment are high. ;-)
