Summary:

Asmov’s first law states that ‘A robot may not injure a human being, or through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.’

The SWORDS robot is described as a “bootstrapped” effort, retrofitting weapons onto an existing platform. The military is still a long way from the Tactical Autonomous Combatant (TAC) described in a Project Alpha study “Unmanned Effects: Taking the Human out of the Loop”; TAC robots are seen as being faster and more lethal than human soldiers, and able to work in more hazardous environments. This study, which was done in 2003, saw TACs as a reality by 2025

The US Army is deploying armed robots in Iraq that are capable of breaking Asmov's first law that they should not harm a human.

SWORDS (Special Weapons Observation Reconnaissance Detection Systems) robots are equipped with either the M249, machine gun which fires 5.56-millimeter rounds at 750 rounds per minute or the M240, which fires 7.62-millimeter rounds at up to 1,000 per minute.

They are still connected by radio to a human operator who verifies that a suitable target is within sight and orders it to fire. Then the robot has the job of making sure lots of bullets are sent towards the target.

The bots are modified Talon robots that have been used by the military for at least four years, but apparently they are better at shooting than human soldiers.

Later the US plans to replace the control system of the bots with a “Gameboy” type of controller hooked up to virtual reality goggles. There are some pictures here.

Oh, for the good ol’ days, when warriors used to clash on the battlefield, face to face in a mortal struggle to test each other’s mettle and bravery. Tomorrow’s pussies, without even the balls to wage war in the flesh. At least fat American kids will be able to kill enemies of the state without getting off their asses.

All it takes is a lightning strike.

heh.. we’ll see about that..

oh.. wait.. that’s not really a robot, but a mutant inside a robot.

I hate this shit. It’s like these mufuckers have never seen a movie, never thought about the implications of this kind of crap. The atom bomb was a fucking bad idea, and this crap will be too also as well.

And doesn’t Asimov’s first law apply to artificial intelligence…? Not just any robot? Because, in that case, the battery-powered Lego robots I build to hurt animals and children have beat the Military to breaking the law by a decade or so.

Later the US plans to replace the control system of the bots with a “Gameboy” type of controller hooked up to virtual reality goggles. There are some pictures here.

Between the MySpace/ AIM internet culture memes, the Matrix MMORPG, and this shit, we’ve managed to create the foundations of the Matrix within a decade of the movie warning us.

But as this whole story shows, we don’t watch enough movies.

Thus, V for Vendetta will have no effect. Shit.

Oh, I think they have.

Memnoch01 @ 03/16/06 09:35:36

And its your tax dollars that are paying for this.

Hairy @ 03/16/06 10:11:48

Not mine sucka!

Memnoch01 @ 03/16/06 10:20:18

Nothin new, it’s a land version of the predator drone.

when are these bots going to be sent to ‘win the hearts and minds’ of Iraqi’s.

linger @ 03/16/06 11:54:31

Or perhaps, secure unrest in an area of catatrophe within our borders.

Sounds repugnant.

PUSH THE BUTTON!

The military has been planning for this for years. They sponsor the creation of many of the combat video games, and if those games are played online the military can get the info on who the best are at them. The brainwashing and trining the kids are going through is just preparing for “the control system of the bots with a “Gameboy” type of controller hooked up to virtual reality goggles”. They will get the best of the best with the gameboy controllers for operations. These kids will still be playing video games but the results will be lots of real dead bodies, and the kids will never have to see the results of real blood and guts. No conscience.

old_hippie @ 03/16/06 15:08:52

Ai will be thier smart move and it’s structing is the right technology, decisions will be made by individual vehicles to insure real time lag free engagement.

neverknwo @ 03/16/06 15:15:12

...guess I’d rather be a cowboy…

There was a book about this by Orson Scott Card (Science Fiction, of course) and it was called Ender’s Game, and truly the boys didnt know, for reasons of state security, perhaps if they had known there would have been no war.

The fact is that this is happenning behind the scenes, like GMOs or cyborg bugs. the IMC isnt asking the people if they want it, they are doing it for the “security” of the american people. Ask any of the 2k dead soldiers and they would certainly rather be replaced by robots.

Now as for the ethical implications of waging a state war against enemies that are real, while we hide behind robotic soldiers piloted by kids, i would say that is one way in which to unilaterally piss off the entire globe, and end up with more and more small, perhaps sectarian, certainly religious, and possibly even state backed groups together to pull heists that perhaps could eclipse 9/11’s terrible glow of violence.

meanwhile the people controlling the robots will be farther underground, more protected, with both cement walls and propaganda calls… how many pilots from underground does it take to let fly a nuclear ICBM if they are each told they are the only one doing it, and they are each assured that this ‘one’ is the one to end the war? well i cant answer that, but i can say that any who wouldnt, would be replaced, so how many pilots are there? cause we have… what? some 20k nuclear ICBMs that could possibly be used?

nasty nasty nasty. No accountability. I cry with the old hippy, i cry for old values that are lost, and are stomped out and are never to return in this crazy marathon race for centralism and this orwellian rhetoric that allows our rights to erode here in the USA without so much as a concerted whimper from the opposition party…

We used to term this loss in terms of losing ground, i think now we can safely say that American values and the rhetoric of our state are losing far more, they are losing humanity.

Aside from the moral implications of making a novel new way to kill each other, this sort of thing will probably end up bleeding our military funding dry in an attempt to use super expensive solutions to modern combat. We trained the Afghanis (and Osama) how to win against a “superpower” by chipping away at their men and equipment with low cost weapons and tactics. The former USSR fell into the trap and were toppled financially by trying to hold on to Afghanistan militarily. Right now we can’t keep our soldiers equipped with proper armor or basic equipment while we allow Halliburton to bleed our coffers with impunity.

Just wait until the enemies we send these things against figure out thier weaknesses (just like fighting the boss in a video game, find his pattern and break him down) and we’ll be seeing these million dollar soldiers thwarted for pennies apiece.
