Iraq Redux? Iran May Face U.N. Security Council
I read this just after reading on GNN about a “Counterpunch” article reporting the drafting of military plans for Iran. If Iran goes before a U.N. with John Bolton speaking for the United States, chances for a “peaceful” solution diminish even further for the Middle East and greater world. This will be one story to follow in the coming months.

Iran to Resume Nuclear Activity, Spokesman Says

TEHRAN, July 31 – Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman said today that Iran had decided to resume nuclear activities at one of its nuclear sites but that it would keep its freeze over uranium enrichment.
Hamidreza Assefi, the spokesman, said that Iran was going to send its letter to International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna “today or tomorrow” to announce its decision about starting work at the Uranium Conversion Facility in Isfahan.
“We were waiting for the Europeans to offer us their proposal,” said Mr. Assefi, referring to a deadline Iran had set for Europe to offer a proposal until the end of July, ISNA news agency reported.
But according to leaked information, he said, their proposal does not respect Iran’s right to enrich uranium. “They have suggested that their proposal is beautifully wrapped but an empty one,” he said.
Iran’s decision to resume nuclear activities may risk problems with the United Nations Security Council, where Iran can face sanctions. The three European countries, Britain, Germany and France had warned that they would back calls by the United States to send Iran’s case to the Security Council if Iran breached its agreement with them.

With Cheney wanting a nuclear strike, Bolton in the U.N. to provide political support for it, and the Iranians determined, I would suggest moving the doomsday clock to 5 minutes to midnight.
