Going Veggie Can Slash Your Carbon Footprint: Study
The mainstream media is finally catching up and reporting an albeit small piece on vegetarianism and its relation to the biosphere. The study was conducted the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IOeW), an organization that both supports and promotes sustainable living.
The calculations are based on emissions of greenhouse gases, including methane produced by the animals themselves, as well as emissions from food production including manufacturing feed and fertiliser and the use of farmland.

Giving up meat could drastically reduce your carbon footprint, with meat-eaters’ diets responsible for almost twice the emissions of those of vegetarians, a German study said on Tuesday.
A diet with meat is responsible for producing in a year the same amount of greenhouse gases as driving a mid-sized car 4,758 kilometres (2,956 miles), the Institute for Ecological Economy Research (IOeW) said.
But the food a vegetarian consumes in 12 months is responsible for generating the same emissions as driving 2,427 kilometres, the IOeW said in a study commissioned by independent consumer protection group Foodwatch.

Born and raised very humbly in a “small town” in southern California, I was a product of different worlds. Literally, part of my family descends from Mexico the rest from Portugal and Uruguay. This mixture had kept me from supporting any racist psyche found...

You betcha!
Love it. Maybe it’ll seem “manly” soon, too. I know being a vegetarian ain’t for everybody, but I’ll tell you, it’s good for a lot of ills, and you know that local and lower on the food chain is good for what’s itching our economic and worldly angst at present.
But, the seers tell us that the market will drive us there, wherever there is!
Eat your whole grains, kids. Even General Mills is making Lucky Charms with whole oats and wheat. Plus a heaping helpful of sugar. Funny stuff.
Magic marshmellow!
I hear if you kill your self, your carbon footprint can be reduced to zero….just a thought for all you nihilists out there
Wow who would have thought? By living a sustainable (or as sustainible as possible) lifestyle you can help the environment.
Voila, the seers speak :
12 deaths in Canada linked to listeria outbreak in meat products
Sheisssssssssssssssssssssse Rebel, you left out THE BEST PART :
Going vegan — giving up meat and dairy products — would cut the emissions released in making what you eat more than seven-fold, to the equivalent of driving 629 kilometres, it said.
And if it is all organic, your food footprint is almost a 17th of that of a meat-eater — the equivalent of driving 281 kilometres.
4,758 to 281.
Prolly if you just de-industrialize your meat products you’d shrink the footprint just as dramatically. They must have just run the stats on the total size of the meat industry. I’m willing to bet they didn’t look for waste data.
Then there’s all the freezing and transportation costs, both financial and environmental.
In 2005, 322,841 men died from heart disease, the leading cause of death for men in the United States.
The age-adjusted death rate for heart disease in men was 260 per 100,000 population in 2005.
About 9.4% of all white men, 7.1% of black men, and 5.6% of Mexican American men live with coronary heart disease.
The average age of a first heart attack for men is 66 years.
Almost half of men who have a heart attack under age 65 die within 8 years.
Results from the Framingham Heart Study suggest that men have a 49% lifetime risk of developing coronary heart disease after the age of 40.
Between 70 and 89% of sudden cardiac events occur in men.
Major risk factors for heart disease include high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, tobacco use, diabetes, physical inactivity, and poor nutrition.
Studies suggest that a 10% decrease in total cholesterol levels may reduce the
development of coronary heart disease by almost 30%.
END OF DATA FEED
So to a very large extent, meat eaters ARE reducing their carbon footprint by killing themselves.
Although — clearly meat eating isn’t the only manly cause of death in men. You have also the manly customs of excessive consumption of alcohol and chain smoking.
It’s funny that death by meat eating should be a quintessentially masculine phenomena — because mad cow disease, the original culture where it was found in humans — was in Tasmania.
It turned out that the women and children were eating the dead. Because the men felt that since they did all the hunting, they should get the meat. So what else were the women going to do? That’s how the Prion got its first start in life.
Some people say Monsanto engineered the Prion to cull the lower end of the population (now all dying of “early onset Alzheimers”) — but the more popular interpretation is that the prion is making a home for itself in our Vital Statistics via the custom of feeding dead animals to the animals destined for the food supply.
“just a thought for all you nihilists out there”
Why would a nihilist care about his carbon footprint?
“I hear if you kill your self, your carbon footprint can be reduced to zero” – A logical progression form this is that genocide is good for the environment
“A logical progression form this is that genocide is good for the environment”
If you want to get technical and unemotional about it: it most certainly would be. Just of the human species, though.
“Just of the human species, though.”
Well of course. Were the plague that has come to infect earth and poison its oceans rivers valleys air and many more of its natural beauties.
Besides the extinction of humans would probably save the world from the 6th mass extinction
So good riddance mankind…
I’m a vegetarian, and while a lot of my friends eat meat….I did convince some of them to not eat meat everyday and try some veggie stuff. They all like it, being a vegetarian just sounds very unhip and it makes them think I eat salad everyday. Now they know it’s different :)
A message from Jack LaLanne—
“Milk is for a suckling calf”
An excerpt . . .
“The way people eat today is sick,” laments LaLanne. “Would you even feed your dog a cup of coffee and a doughnut in the morning?” Mr. LaLanne has many favorite sayings when it comes to diet: “Everything nature’s way.… If man makes it, don’t eat it.…If it tastes good, spit it out.…The food you eat today you’re wearing tomorrow.” He lives by all of them. “Before I eat something I ask ‘What is it doing for me, the most important person on Earth?’ “
Mr. LaLanne only eats two meals per day: One at 11 a.m. after his workout and one at 7 p.m. at a restaurant with his wife.
His 11 a.m. meal consists of three to four hard-boiled egg whites, a cup of broth-type soup, oatmeal with soy milk, raisins and a plate of seasonal fruit.
“[...] Four egg whites have the same amount of protein as one pound of steak but only 60 calories compared to 1,000 calories.” Mr. LaLanne eats fish nearly every night at dinner. The only other meat he eats is roast turkey. He doesn’t snack between meals.
With dinner he drinks wine — [the French live longest, they have wine every day, he says] “Americans drink milk instead. Milk is for a suckling calf. How many creatures still use milk after they’re weaned? Man."
He also takes between 30 and 40 vitamins every day.
In an exclusive interview with CNN in the Black Sea city of Sochi, Putin announced . . . that nineteen U.S. poultry meat companies will be banned from exporting their products to Russia because they have failed health and safety tests, and 29 other companies have been warned to improve their standards or face the same ban.
a vegan saves a thousand times the resources as someone who does not drive a car.
-g null
basis? but gary knows shit
I was veg forever then i decided at least i pray for my victims, and i ate some eel avocado rolls, yum
really, one cannot be pure veg if one wants to practice canibalism
veggie vegan omnivore cannibal or fine young cannibal
it makes no fucking difference what you eat its how you do it
violation of the predator-prey relationship is the problem
take more out of the system than you return and your gonna fuck it up
if you switch to a veggie diet youll probably live longer, thus increasing your overall carbon footprint and possible negating the effect of eating veggie
that’s why, in the name of fucking sustainablity, i have created the ultimate diet for the environmentally conscious during the apocalypse… and as soon as i get even more high im going to blog it.
eat drink laugh love live
tomorrow we die
or tomorrow we diet…
“genocide is good for the environment”
of course it is! All those people not consuming. not getting a “proper” burial(being pumped full of preservatives, driven around in big ass cars, put into a box that is covered in toxic sealants, and placed in a cemetery that must be mowed and the grounds are sprayed with pesticides and herbicides for extended periods of time). Rather they spill blood thus giving nutrients to plants and usually put into a big pit to rot, again giving nutrients to the plants and scavengers… decomposition is my position
was raised strict vegetarian. remained that way till about age 13. Never once did it seem anything like living off salad.
while to this day I maintain a healthy diet big on veggies, fruit, which I do love I’m able to devour the occasional rib eye like there’s no tomorrow…
well, Liv seems to suggest soon enuf there might not be one..
he’s right, let’s eat, get drunk, fuck lots.
“Milk is for a suckling calf”
Maybe, but ice cream and cheese are delicious.
I only eat meat that has been waved over a fire for show.
yeah JL, fuck lots but for fucks sakes no more goddamn babies
