Headlines : Media
Summary:

It’s news if Tom Brokaw is sent anthrax powder in an envelope, but is it news if an independent media publisher is told to stop “what he is doing on the Internet” by three unidentified strangers who broke into his home?

This is what happened to the publisher of Information Clearing House, one of the most popular alternative news sources on the Web. Tom Feely, according to his friend Mike Whitney, publisher of FlybyNews (another popular independent news site), has been threatened more than once in the past, but this latest incident seems more serious. And the F.B.I. apparently says they cannot do anything.

Three men broke into the home of the publisher of an anti-war news aggregator Website to deliver threats to his wife

My friend Tom Feeley is in Big trouble. He runs the web site informationclearinghouse.info which updates “news you won’t find in the corporate media” every day. The site is strongly anti-war.

Tom has gotten his share of death threats over the years, but what happened this week is a lot more serious.

Two days ago, Tom’s wife found three well dressed men in their kitchen. The man who did all the talking, told Tom’s wife (I won’t give her name) that Tom must “Stop what he is doing on the Internet, NOW!” As crazy as it sounds, he pulled back his lapel and showed her a gun of some kind which she could not identify. Like I said, Tom has been threatened before, but nothing like this.

I hope this isn’t true, but if it is, Tom’s first step should be to report on it on his own website. His next step should be to go public with names and descriptions. I’m still trying to find confirmation of this without success.

That’s fucked up, and if it’s true I think they are most likely NOT members of an elite government conspiracy. If such people wanted your website down, it would go down. They wouldn’t need to speak to you about it, ever.

Hmm, looks legit I suppose, he really needs to go public.

Yes, cowing to the intimidation tactic is exactly the wrong reaction, I have to agree with Mr. Jones. That said, I can’t exactly fault him for it.

Dear Mr. Madsen,

I read of your report on the subject indicated above via Richard Volaar’s commentary piece published on OpEdNews. I, therefore, tried to go to the source, but find that this article is only available to paid WMR subscribers. As a struggling writer myself I understand the need to earn a living from one’s writing, and that a subscription-based service is perhaps the best available option for those of us whose writing is likely to be ignored by the mainstream media.

However, I also think that if such an NSA list of journalists and bloggers does exist as alleged — particularly in the context of the one-line description included above on the WMR site, that is, in the context of a sentiment within the NSA that “journalists [and presumably bloggers given the headline] should be killed” — well, it would seem to me that you would want to openly share such a list with the public.

This would help to expose the program to greater public scrutiny, help to publicize to society at large the dangers which are inherent within extralegal intelligence operations (and that perhaps we do not have a free press), and help to minimize the likelihood that such an assassination, or intimidation, program will or could occur.

Given the recent threats which have reportedly been made against Information Clearing House editor, Tom Feeley, and his family, it would seem that such a program may in fact be underway already.

Regardless, if such a list does exist and you have it in your possession, public interest would seem to warrant that you make the full list — not only of particularly well-known journalists and bloggers — publicly and freely available.

Thank you for your consideration.

Respectfully yours,

Sean M. Madden
