Summary:

Puerto Rico unfortunately is plagued by corruption. The reds (PPD), the blues (PNP), and the greens (PIP); they all cheat in a game of make believe politics. Today, the reds were caught, well, red handed. The PPD (their color is red but they support colonialism and status quo) engaged in a bit of election fraud. Anibal Acevedo Vila won precisely because the people didn’t want a corrupt governor. It was a historic election that defeated the agents of corruption from the PNP headed by Pedro Rosello. Last decade the PNP was the one stealing millions from the people. However the mastermind was never charged because he had many friends in the federal government. This time around, this governor is rather unpopular with the federal government. The damage is done and the people are going to be even more skeptical and apathetic. Even if they were all-baseless accusations people around him could be found guilty and he will be forever the corrupt by proxy. For now, read up on this and I promise to write more about it in the near future. Corruption is corruption and should be punished but too many questions were left unanswered… let’s hope the media finds them before his political persona is burned at the stake.

Anibal Acevedo Vila, the governor of Puerto Rico, has been charged with 19 crimes related to the financing of three political campaigns from 1999 to 2004, including conspiracy to violate federal campaign laws and making false statements to federal investigators, according to a federal indictment unsealed on Thursday.

The indictment, which emerged from a grand jury investigation lasting more than two years, also charged 12 other people associated with Mr. Acevedo’s party, the Popular Democratic Party.

“Electoral fraud undermines the essence of our representative form of government and operates to the detriment of every Puerto Rican,” said Rosa Emilia Rodriguez-Velez, the United States attorney in San Juan.

But in a statement, Mr. Acevedo, 45, who is running for re-election, denied that he had commited any crimes and contended that the indictment was politically motivated. He called the indictment “a spectacle designed to do me harm.” He said he would address the issue at 5:30 p.m. Eastern time on Thursday, and turn himself in to federal authorities on Friday morning.
