While other NATO countries hold the Afghanistan adventure away from their noses like a bad smell, Condoleezza Rice and British Foreign Secretary Miliband visit the troops there and mutter on about what the soldiers are fighting for without being too specific. Their host and pal President Hamid Karzai might be able to help as he refuses to condemn the death sentence handed down to Sayed Parwez Kaambakhsh, a young journalist convicted of downloading and distributing a report questioning polygamy.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, during a visit here Thursday, said a “more coherent international approach” is needed in Afghanistan to build on what she described as significant progress.
At the same time, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates told journalists after a meeting of NATO defense ministers in Vilnius, Lithuania, that he did not think the alliance was failing in its efforts to secure Afghanistan, despite his continued criticism of some members that have declined to provide additional combat troops or lift restrictions on operations.
“I don’t think there’s a crisis” or a “risk of failure,” Gates said. He said that adding more fighting forces would create an “opportunity to make further progress faster” in beating back the insurgency, but he did not repeat his complaint that Germany has insisted on confining its troops to safe areas of Afghanistan, while the United States, Canada, Britain and others have borne the brunt of combat risks.

Good news. When Gates says he doesn’t think there’s a crisis or a risk of failure, it means he thinks there’s a crisis and a risk of failure.
That’s why he went to Lithuania to say it.
Why should Karzai mean what he says any more than Gates does?
When Rice says Rice, Afghanistan now faces “determined enemies” who will not be easy to defeat. She’s talking about the Corporations.
When she says “It’s not work that’s going to be completed overnight,” she’s talking about the determination of the Corporations.
It’s a simple crib, really, once you figure it out.
