Galileo protest halts pope's visit
Pope Benedict XVI was forced to cancel a trip to La Sapienza University for remarks he made condoning “the 1633 trial and conviction of the scientist Galileo for heresy.” Rome’s La Sapienza University, which was founded by Pope Boniface VIII in 1303, saw sixty-seven professors and researchers of the university’s physics department joined in the call for the pope to stay away because of his irrational Christian perspective verses that of rational science. Pope Benedict stated that the trial was “reasonable and just,” lending to possible speculation that he is simply crazy.

Flat, flat, not round, flat
It is hard not to laugh at the absurdity behind this statement and story, except to realize that this Nazi Pope actually believes this, and about 2.1 billion humans blindly follows his lead.

Pope Benedict XVI has canceled a planned visit to a prestigious Italian university after a protest by academics and students attacked his views on Galileo, the Vatican confirmed Tuesday.
The pope had been due to give a speech at La Sapienza university in Rome Thursday to open its academic year.
However, the visit drew criticism from academics at the university who signed a letter demanding that the trip be called off. Separately, students protested outside the university, carrying banners insisting the university is a lay institution and the pope is not welcome.
“Given the events of the past days regarding the visit of the Holy Father to La Sapienza university upon the rector’s invitation, which was scheduled to take place Thursday, January 17, it was decided to postpone the event,” the Vatican said in a short written statement.
Father Ciro Benedettini, a spokesman for the Vatican, confirmed to CNN the academic protests had prompted the cancellation.

Currently a student at Arizona State University working of a History degree and another in film. The greatest enemy to humanity has been the philosophy of christianity and white hegemony that uses this philosophy to oppress. See this social sickness for what...

As a Catholic, I am embarrassed by this Pope and our last one for their conservative beliefs. The late Archbishop Romero of El Salvador and those serving the poor our the only reason I hang on to my Catholicism.
At least the last pope was the one to finally acknowledge that the earth isn’t stationary
yeah, though i oppose organized religion, i have a soft spot for liberation theology
Hmmm, I dunno about this one. Although I am no religious and personally would never be too interested in listening to what the Pope has to say, I am also not a big fan of prohibiting anyone from expressing their opinions and views, as dumb and embarrassing as they can be.
I still contend that ‘Liberation Theology’ is an oxymoron…
I feel the same way about white supremists…
Truth makes a valid point Shifty , ‘Liberation Theology’ is an oxymoron… The greatest perpetrator of crimes against humanity, beginning with the Nicene Creed in the 4th Century at the Council of Constantinople, (381). has been the Catholic Church and the vicar of Rome. This was a forced social construct that has defined humanity since, mind you this was a counsel of White men who were creating a divinely inspired hegemony for a very small percentage of people.
This ecclesiastic corporate enterprise has maintained this unnatural social rule for almost 2000 years. There is nothing divinely inspired about this engine of social oppression, the number of humans killed because of the enterprise will never be known. However, it is a safe bet to suggest that had this orthodoxy of hate never been created, the world would be a much happier and peaceful place.

I dunno. Once Christianity became the state religion of the Roman Empire, gladiatorial combat declined and gradually ceased. I don’t imagine less bloodlust, less bloodshed, or less oppression happening just because the radically peaceful, rebel religion of slaves wouldn’t have been coopted, adopted, and promulgated by the elites of the Empire. All it really did was focus the generalized hatred downward (onto the poor and the “unsaved”) and outward (onto the heathens and the foreigners).
Humans are pretty bloodthirsty and cruel creatures regardless of what they say they believe – it’s just some beliefs point our weapons in a particular direction.
gladiatorial combat declined and gradually ceased… True enough; however, the sickness of monotheism (Christianity in this case) is the component that they are true and right in God’s eyes and if you do not hold this to be true…in some cases you died.
The use of the hereafter (heaven and hell) as a threat is on par with a criminal holding a gun to a child’s head while the criminal rapes the mother and telling the child that he or she better not say anything or God will kill you in hell. In the above analogy, the mother is the human race, and the child is the unlearned people of this earth forced to watch the rape by this organization.
Rome fell because they became short on lions. They’re delicate creatures.
