Australian recalls incidents of torture at Guantanamo Bay in defamation case
The story of Australian Mamdouh Habib is a disturbing, yet now all-too-familiar one. He was picked up by Pakistani police in early October 2001, part of a broad sweep in the aftermath of Al-Qaeda’s September 11 attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Centre.
He became part of the CIA’s ongoing ‘extraordinary rendition’ program, where people swept up by intelligence agencies worldwide are flown to third-party countries, countries with no qualms about torture, where no lawyers speak and where nobody gets a right of reply.
Habib spent three years in custody. Three years without charge.
