Summary:

Hamas’ victory in Palestine’s 2006 election did not suit the government of Israel, which has since then contrived to keep the Occupied Territories deprived of the necessities for a reasonable existence. However, last week’s battles between Hamas and Fatah suited Olmert and co. admirably: Palestinians killing each other, divided and effectively impotent. Opponents of Hamas see new elections as the only escape from the impasse.

Meanwhile Israel gives a further twist to the screw on the benighted Palestinians:

“We should simply increase the isolation of Gaza,” Infrastructure Minister Ben-Eliezer told Israel’s Army Radio. “I want to stop everything until we understand what is going on there.”

Full marks to those governments offering material, financial and moral support to a state bent on undermining a neighboring democracy through economic strangulation.

“We are still providing fuel for Gaza power stations, but not for smaller gas stations,” said a spokeswoman for Dor Alon, one of Israel’s largest fuel companies and a major Gaza supplier.

Israel has said it hopes to isolate Gaza after Hamas ousted Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s secular Fatah faction and took control of the coastal strip.

The Western-backed Abbas was set to swear in an emergency cabinet on Sunday after he sacked a three-month-old unity government he formed with Hamas, which won Palestinian parliamentary elections in January 2006.
