Summary:

It appears that venerated, former Canadian parliamentarian David Kilgour has succeeded in getting CanWest Global, the nation’s biggest newspaper publishing group, to take up his pet cause of lobbying for full investigation into claims of organized involuntary organ harvesting by Chinese authorities.

Kilgour’s connections to Canada’s Liberal Party run deep, as do CanWest’s. The past week has seen a flurry of CanWest stories that run shockingly counter to the normal media practice of casting the Chinese Communist Party in the best possible light.

Even the National Post ran a report on a FLG member serving a visiting Chinese official with a lawsuit in the elevator of an Ottawa hotel.

And then, there was this lead sentence in a Canadian Press story : A Chinese official vilified by the Falun Gong organization as a persecutor and a torturer is holding talks with Trade Minister David Emerson this week. Spin, what spin?

But it’s so nice to see CanWest getting real with Beijing.

Former Canadian parliamentarians join doctors' group and Falun Gong in demanding a full inquiry into organ harvesting claims

A coalition of Falun Gong supporters is calling for a boycott of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing if the Chinese government does not allow an independent investigation of organ-harvesting allegations.

The Canadian chapter of a coalition that claims China supports the illegal harvesting of a range of organs from imprisoned Falun Gong practitioners said the boycott should begin in August unless China complies with the request.

At a Parliament Hill news conference, former Liberal MPs David Kilgour and Simma Holt, along with a group called Doctors Against Organ Harvesting, lent their support to the demand from the Coalition to Investigate the Persecution of Falun Gong.

“It’s simply impossible, in my view, to have torture and killing going on in one part of Beijing and the games going on in another part of Beijing,” said Mr. Kilgour.
