Summary:

Authorities are attempting to ensure there’s no repeat of the FARC’s mortar attack on the presidential palace as Uribe was sworn in as president in 2002. The mortars fell short, killing more than 20 people in a nearby slum.

A number of demonstrations have sprung up across Colombia to protest Bush’s arrival. Some 200 protesting students at the National University clashed with police on Thursday.

Security is being beefed up in Bogota in preparation for Bush's visit

BOGOTA, Colombia: Colombia’s police chief said Thursday that authorities have foiled leftist rebel plans for terrorist acts to disrupt Sunday’s visit by U.S. President George W. Bush. Police offered no details of the alleged plot.

“We have heard some orders given by these criminals to carry out acts to disturb the peace, and we know that that these will be acts of terrorism,” said Gen. Jorge Daniel Castro, Colombia’s highest-ranking police officer, in a press conference. “But we have taken measures to neutralize them.”

He would give no details.

The last time that Bush visited Colombia, touching down in the Caribbean city of Cartagena in 2004, authorities claimed to have discovered an assassination plot by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, or FARC. Later, officials said there was no evidence of any such conspiracy.

If the FARC lets Bush enter Colombia without doing anything against his visit, it will show how weak their organization has become.

After decades of U.S. money going to right wing militias and the government its a wonder the FARC still exists.
