Summary:

More news of a possible impending attack on Iran.

This comes as more and more newspapers in Europe are discussing the possibility of a U.S./Israeli war with Iran.

What is worrying in this report is that there are two triggers stated, evidence of the development of a nuclear weapon or an attack on U.S. forces in Iraq traceable to Iran.

Let’s hope this is just more sabre rattling!

U.S. contingency plans for air strikes on Iran extend beyond nuclear sites and include most of the country's military infrastructure, the BBC has learned.

It is understood that any such attack – if ordered – would target Iranian air bases, naval bases, missile facilities and command-and-control centres.

The US insists it is not planning to attack, and is trying to persuade Tehran to stop uranium enrichment.

The UN has urged Iran to stop the programme or face economic sanctions.

But diplomatic sources have told the BBC that as a fallback plan, senior officials at Central Command in Florida have already selected their target sets inside Iran.

That list includes Iran’s uranium enrichment plant at Natanz. Facilities at Isfahan, Arak and Bushehr are also on the target list, the sources say.

Two triggers

BBC security correspondent Frank Gardner says the trigger for such an attack reportedly includes any confirmation that Iran was developing a nuclear weapon – which it denies.

Iran has powerfull friends. There is more than the power of weapons. When the US demanded withdraw from UK during the Suez Canal invasion, they liquidated their reserve of UK currency. It brought the pound down in a week and UK withdrew as demanded.

maybe the chinese would do the same with dolar ?
somehow I doubt it … but you can never know …

shade @ 02/21/07 01:37:38

They could. They hold 17% of US debt.

i didn’t realize china held that small of a percentage of u.s. debt.

and, i’ll bet that this news is tenuously linked to Britain pulling troops out of Iraq.

I bet it doesn’t seem like a small amount to them.

GWHunta @ 02/21/07 18:42:39

yes indeed. the iraqi infrastructure should have been built/established/re-established using 14k gold by now. and if china owns 17% of debt and they recall the debt in full, the u.s. could have to pay in real estate assets. no wonder china won’t agree on pegging the yuan. if they wait long enough, they can make buckets of duckets on both sides of the pacific pond. gold anyone?

sometimes peace=no peace. i signed off for you that time.
