Summary:

The new Antarctic measurements, using data from two NASA satellites called the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE), found that the amount of water pouring annually from the ice sheet into the ocean — equivalent to the amount of water the United States uses in three months — is causing global sea level to rise by 0.4 millimeters a year. The continent holds 90 percent of the world’s ice, and the disappearance of even its smaller West Antarctic ice sheet could raise worldwide sea levels by an estimated 20 feet.

The Antarctic ice sheet is losing as much as 36 cubic miles of ice a year in a trend that scientists link to global warming, according to a new paper that provides the first evidence that the sheet’s total mass is shrinking significantly.

The new findings, which are being published today in the journal Science, suggest that global sea level could rise substantially over the next several centuries.

It is one of a slew of scientific papers in recent weeks that have sought to gauge the impact of climate change on the world’s oceans and lakes. Just last month two researchers reported that Greenland’s glaciers are melting into the sea twice as fast as previously believed, and a separate paper in Science today predicts that by the end of this century lakes and streams on one-fourth of the African continent could be drying up because of higher temperatures.

Heh and people still say that Global Climate change isn’t happening. I swear at times I wonder if those were the same sort of people that have been denying prisoner abuse at Gitmo, Jews not wondering how they were able to build the settlement on top of a hill, and Europeans for not truly wondering what that smell was everyday back in the 40’s. I guess people lie to themselves so that they don’t expose their minds to the harsh reality of the world. Sadly enough however this sort of shit is killing species after species, but you will never see national spokespeople like Bush, Pat Roberston, or John Hagee screaming for change immediately. I guess people don’t like their boat being rocked after all they will be dead before anything drastic happens. Right?

I prefer the term “liberation of the H20 from the evil freedom-hating ice sheets.”

yup. sometimes there are mutants that don’t like lies, though.

yup. no need to rock the boat, pachamama is a mad pirate
learn to swim, see you down in arizona bay

ice, ice baby
The scientists stress this melting of the WAIS is a natural process but they cannot rule out that global warming may now be playing a part.
WAIS is west antarctic ice sheet

and then theres this
and that
and penguins feel it, too

oh course, now we just need the ‘war on weather’ to fix things, right ?

LOL!

Anything that could make rain fall on the White House has to be in the axis of evil.

The U.S., Russia and China have been carrying out weather manipulation for years. No-one really questions that these tests may have something to do with climate change. Personally I think it would be a valid question.
