Court orders 35 to stand trial over CIA flights
More news in the Bush administration’s ongoing efforts to use torture as a viable “tool” in the questioning of terror suspects. An Italian court has indicted 26 Americans, almost all CIA agents, as well as a handful of Italians in connection to the agency’s “extraordinary rendition” program, which allegedly transports terror suspects to U.S.-friendly countries that practice torture. Since none of the accused Americans are in custody and the Italian government hasn’t asked for their extradition, it appears this may be more of a P.R. move by Italy’s government than a real effort to prosecute crimes.

An Italian court has ordered 26 Americans and six Italians to stand trial in connection with the CIA’s “extraordinary rendition” program.
The 35 are scheduled to go to trial June 8 for allegedly kidnapping and transferring a terror suspect to third countries. Three other Italians face charges of complicity in the kidnappings.
However, none of the Americans — almost all CIA agents — is in custody in Italy and the Italian government has not asked for their extradition to Italy.
The case revolves around the alleged kidnapping of Osama Nasr Mostafa Hassan, an Egyptian-born Muslim cleric, also known as Abu Omar, in February 2003. (Watch how the CIA allegedly abducted the terrorist suspect)
At the time of his disappearance, Milan prosecutors were investigating him for alleged links to terrorism.
