FBI Joint Terrorism Task Force Harrassing Activists in NYC
This may or may not be the beginning of FBI harassment of US citizens who are active in the movement against the occupation of Iraq. It is certainly part of a pattern of harassment and repression, mostly targeting people from the Muslim and Arab communities and immigrants. Whether it is the beginning of more generalized harassment, we feel it is important that socialists, radicals and anti-war and global justice activists generally understand their rights when approached by the FBI.

On Friday, February 25, 2005, two FBI agents came to my home in Brooklyn. I was at work and they began to question my partner about Solidarity, the socialist organization I belong to, and its possible connection to a young man who was arrested for allegedly vandalizing a military recruitment center in the Bronx, NY. The FBI agents indicated that they had obtained our address from the Solidarity website, where I am listed as the NY contact person. They asked my partner numerous questions, including whether or not we knew the young men who had been arrested, how long she (who is not a member) and I have been members of Solidarity and whether Solidarity had a “web forum.”

it’s sad, but i hear these stories all the time… a couple of friends of mine were telling me that the police (about 4-5 cars) go to the mosque in brooklyn stating that “there are reports of an officer shot inside” and demanding to search the mosque… they usually stick a head in the door to look around but don’t enter because you have to take your shoes off to do so…. then they leave… apparently this has happened like 20 times in the past year and people (almost all black or arab muslims) feel as though there is nothing they can do about it… it’s not only there… i hear a lot of stories about people just plain nervous or afraid to go out because they’ve been harrassed so much…
It’s only a matter of time till not just “Muslims” are targeted, but any person who is against the war machine of Bush abd his SS men. I can hear the boot heels now…......

My daughter goes to a Buddhist school in California where most of the students are Chinese (Taiwanese and Malaysian) nationals on student visas. Homeland Security has been by to snoop on them, especially after some racist neighbors started rumors of bomb-making activity at the school. How absurd. HS officers were polite though, and seemed satisfied when they left.
you’re so right, i mean even now, police are cracking down HARD on activists… look at the monthly critical mass ride in NY, these cyclists have always gotten together and ridden together the last friday of every month, once they started doing it too protest bush, the police freaked out beating and arresting like 250 of them….
with all the stories i read about people being kicked out of school, questioned for clothing they have on, or making anti-government comments, i can’t help but think the worst is yet to come…
this aint america, is it?
Where can I be?
