North Korea has sent an envoy to China in hopes of patching now-tense relations between the traditionally allied states. Vao News says that ‘Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Hong Lei said Beijing plans to discuss the situation on the Korean peninsula and “issues of common concern” with Choe.’

This shift in political climate can be placed in perspective by identifying current political posturing from the Middle-East and Russia.

Los Angeles, California voters have chosen to support a ballot measure that will decrease the number of medical marijuana dispensaries in the city. According to Reuters the last ballot count showed 63% of cast votes in favor of the measure.

The ballot measure is set to limit the total number of dispensaries to 135 and increase the tax rate to 6% (from 5%). While Marijuana remains an illegal narcotic at the federal level, many states have already legalized its use for recreation and medicine.

After the fatal shooting of a man in Stockholm, Sweden, riots broke out and have continued since the 13 May shooting. Seven people were detained briefly and only one was arrested on suspicion of arson. At least one car and one building have been set afire since the riots started.

Accusations of racism from the Stockholm police forces is part of what fueled the riots, as well as claims of substandard services for poorer parts of the city.

According to the Wall Street Journal, while there were some injuries, no fatalities have been reported.

An immigration bill has come through the Senate Committee relatively unscathed and Obama is now pushing to get it ‘over the finish line’ according to USA Today. S. 744 would allow current illegal aliens to apply for citizenship and providing new investments into border security.

Section 2, paragraph 1 reads:

The passage of this Act recognizes that the primary tenets of its success depend on securing the sovereignty of the United States of America and establishing a coherent and just system for integrating those who seek to join American society.

The Times Of India reports that the Russian government will be aiding the Syrian government in the form of missiles. According to American specialists that are familiar with the weapons they say that the missiles are more advanced than previous versions given to the Syrian government.

The TOI says ‘”It enables the regime to deter foreign forces looking to supply the opposition from the sea, or from undertaking a more active role if a no-fly zone or shipping embargo were to be declared at some point,” said Nick Brown, editor in chief of IHS Jane’s International Defense Review. “It’s a real ship killer.”‘

The Russian government said it has detained a CIA agent recently and is handing him off to be removed from the country. The Federal Security Service says that the man detained was attempting to recruit spies within the country. Included in the footage the Russian government released was a script for recruiting officials in the Russian security services, offering 1 million a year for services rendered, and bonuses for any useful information. The Australian quotes an independent analyst, Alexander Golts, saying that ‘”These numbers raise red flags,” Golts said in a telephone interview. “For that amount, they could have expected to at least get the deputy head of Russia’s foreign intelligence.”‘

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has called out the IRS for supposedly targeting right wing groups looking to gain non-profit status. The IRS has admitted to laying on extra scrutiny where tea party groups were concerned and only stopped when media attention began to shift its way. Democratic leaders in the senate voted to have tax legislation changed in order to “immediately change the administrative framework for enforcement of the tax code as it applies to groups designated as ‘social welfare’ organizations.”
